Landmark California lawsuit on trauma-informed practices in public schools

I have been writing extensively and publishing others’ posts and articles regarding trauma-informed systems for some time. As we have reflected on the ACEs research and the need for trauma-informed practices for our students, we have recognized that there is a significant movement that is beginning to surface all throughout our country.

Here is an intriguing set of events in a Compton, California school district, where there is legal action which could force schools to incorporate trauma-informed practices within their schools. A lawsuit may be considered extreme by many but the idea of helping our schools become trauma-informed can be a huge asset to our students, families, schools and communities.

Here is a link to the article with a summary of the events taking place in California: http://acestoohigh.com/2015/05/18/landmark-lawsuit-filed-to-make-trauma-informed-practices-mandatory-for-all-public-schools/

I am personally highly supportive of trauma-informed practices in our schools because I believe these practices take into consideration the issues that can impact learning and keep our students from being successful. We now understand to inquire and consider, as is mentioned in the article, what happened to the student rather than what is wrong with them.

Although a lawsuit may not be the best vehicle to get this accomplished, I hope this case draws attention to the obligation required of helping our schools recognize the value of these vital practices on behalf of our students. It seems the trend is intensifying nationally and hopefully this will raise new awareness to this vital issue.
